What a fantastic performance by the San Diego Chargers in Saturday's AFC Wild Card 23-17 overtime win against the visiting Indianapolis Colts.

Darren Sproles, Mike Scifres, Antonio Gates, the Charger defense...so much credit to go around the whole team. It was great to see balance in that way - it wasn't just a huge offensive performance, or a shut-down "D" but all sides contributing. Scifres, the punter, was perhaps the most valuable player in the game with four punts placed inside the 10-yard line. None were more important than his final punt in the game with around three minutes to go that put the Colts near their own goal line.

Wildcard weekend had an interesting lineup of games this year.  All four road teams (wildcard teams) were favored to win over the home teams (division winners).  That’s unusual, but this year it actually makes a lot of sense.  Many of the wildcard teams had better records than the division winners.  In the end, the underdogs won two of the four games (both 6th seeds defeated the 3rd seeded teams).

Pretty much all has been written and said about the Chargers-Broncos season-ending game at San Diego. Just wanted to say how "Super" the performance was by the Bolts.

Philip Rivers played a darn-near perfect game. On the way, he shattered Dan Fouts' 1981 club record of season touchdown passes, finishing with 34 and along the way posted the NFL highest pass rating for the season. That was significant in its own right since he was the leading passer for just about the entire season. (Got to be honest though, a handful of times during 2008 I proclaimed that it didn't mean anything when he'd fumble since that doesn't factor in).

Regardless of what happens on Sunday, this was a successful season. I really want a birth in the playoffs, but if the chips don't fall in New England's favor and they are on the outside looking in, then that's just how it is. It wasn't meant to be.

For a guy like Jay Cutler, his performance vs. the Bills will motivate a huge degree of improvement.

Interceptions are bound to Jay's game because he is so super-confident. At the end of the Bill's game, Cutler made two near INT's that could've cost him, but the defense, along with Kavika Mitchell deserve a lot of cred.

The facts are daunting.

The Patriots defense allowed points scored, either touchdowns or field goals, the last 41 times the opponents entered the red zone. Arizona is the second highest scoring team in the league that features receivers 6-0 Steve Breaston, 6-1 Anquan Boldin, and 6-3 Larry Fitzgerald. New England's cornerbacks measure 5-9 Ellis Hobbs, 5-11 Jonathan Wilhite, and 5-11 Deltha O'Neal.

I would like to thank the Minnesota Vikings for putting the boots to the Arizona Cardinals, with their back-up quarterback, to the tune of 35-14. As if the Cards didn't have reason enough to win this Sunday. They're still jockeying for playoff positioning. Now they are hungry to bounce back from Sunday's butt-kicking.

I've been putting off writing this particular entry for awhile.  I was with my parents as my mother's birthday was yesterday.  I had on my Joe Jurevicius jersey, casually flipping a mini Browns football back and forth with my dad, and breaking down with both of them what was going on in the game.  Usually it was me trying to explain the Browns' play calls with logic, which became more and more challenging as the game went on.

Sunday's game against the San Diego Chargers was a must-win for the Falcons. Of course, every game is a must-win if you're in the NFC south. The Falcons didn't disappoint as they defeated San Diego 22-16. However, the score was not indicative of the game.

The upcoming game between the Atlanta Falcons and the San Diego Chargers is a huge one for both teams. For the Falcons, they are playing in an extremely tough NFC south division, and need every win they can get. For the Chargers, a loss could mean the end of a playoff run, as they would fall to 4-8.

This was bound to happen.

For the second week in a row, QB Matt Cassel threw for 400 yards and three touchdowns. This from a guy that looked so bad against San Diego that practically all fans were calling for his head. Now Cassel is at the head of the class as every Pats fans' favorite player. It's at the point that now people think New England should re-sign Cassel and trade Tom Brady.

The Cleveland Browns went in to Buffalo for a show down with the Bills. The First play was from Trent Edwards to the Defense. Trent Edwards threw three total in the game. The Browns where able to move the ball, yet Brady did not get a touchdown pass this week. The Game came down to a close one, with the deciding factor was a missed field goal. So Brady Golden Domer Quinn is now 1-1 in his early carrer.

Sunday was what I invisioned Matt Cassel would be once he was running the full offense. Yes, the offense is still short pass-heavy, but Cassel did look long and tried to connect on a few big plays. Sunday's 20-19 home victory over the Kansas City Chiefs sure wasn't much to get excited about for San Diego Chargers fans. However, they did get the much-needed "W."

The impression coming into the game was the bye week would allow the Chargers to get re-energized. And who better to do it against than the one-win Chiefs? This would explain the bloated two-touchdown-plus spread. Additionally, LaDainian Tomlinson had begun to show his old form.

The Indianapolis Colts got the best of the Pittsburgh Steelers in a 24-20 victory at Heinz Field Sunday evening.  It was poor decision making and play by Pittsburgh’s offense that cost them the game.  The loss drops the Steelers to 6-3, as they are now tied with the Baltimore Ravens for first place in the AFC North.

Great news as the San Diego Chargers have fired Defensive Coordinator Ted Cottrell. At least they are demonstrating they aren't giving up on the season. It hung around the clubs, etc..but it did not focus on what I bought it for: .....making football picks! So I suspended it, grounded it from distractions. I'm glad to announce it has acted in line and it will make its comeback tonight in Week 8! After having a long talk with it, I feel like its the right time to bring it back. On the first play of Denver's Monday Night game against New England, Jay Cutler injured his finger on Vince Wilfork's helmet. This must have messed with Coach Mike Shanahan's usual pre-planned 15-play commencement to every game. Seeing the immediate innaccuracy of Cutler's throwing after the bang-up, more run plays started to get dialed. Since Selvin Young was out of the game, it was 33-year-old back-up Michael Pittman's job to carry the load. Soon thereafter, during the same long drive downfield, Pittman was injured and taken out of the game. Thus third-stringer Andre Hall had to carry the ball. And on his first touch, he fumbled it. The drive was simply doomed from the beginning.

The person who first said, "Love to play with him, hate to play against him," must had been talking about Rodney Harrison.

There is not another player in the NFL who is a better example of that saying. Find a teammate from his nine years with the San Diego Chargers and they completely appreciate Rodney's play to the whistle intensity, often-times beyond. They recognized the difference he made as an enforcer in the secondary. He was respected for giving it his all every play.

Quick question: Would you like a durable running back?

OK, that was a rhetorical question. With alternating LaMont Jordan missing every other game and Laurence "issues" Maroney available for only three of five games this year, it would be nice to have someone the team can count on to help carry the load with Sammy Morris. While the Patriots did rush for more than 100 yards against San Diego, 29 of those yards came from QB Matt Cassel on seven carries.

The NFL is completely lop-sided this year.  The NFC East is undoubtedly the best division in football, with 3 (maybe 4) potential Super Bowl contenders.  Fortunately for the rest of the league, most of the teams regardless of their record at this point could potentially earn a playoff berth by winning their division.  If the playoffs were to end today you would have NY Giants, Chicago, Carolina, Arizona, Washington, and Dallas in the NFC, and Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Tennessee, Denver, New England and one from (NY Jets, Miami, Baltimore, and Indianapolis).  Can the NFC East continue to dominate the NFL?  Can New England keep winning with Matt Cassel?  Who walks out of Indy 3-2?  Lots to look forward to this weekend in the NFL.

It’s finally here, a rematch of last year’s AFC Championship that looked a whole lot different back in April when the schedule first came out. Both teams lost stars to ACL injuries and both teams have lost to last year’s one-win Dolphins. Neither is exactly a Super Bowl favorite at the moment but that doesn’t mean it won’t be a great game between two teams that really don’t like each other. Yours truly will be there to witness the carnage.

Dolphins (2-2) at Texans (0-4)

Now I know you are thinking the Dolphins and Texans? But the "Wildcat" offense in Miami and Houston's epic 4th quarter fallout against Indy makes these two teams right at the top of the list when to comes to football talk. The dolphins are on a two game win streak, something they haven't done since 2006. They have been unstoppable on offense the last two weeks, combining for 851 yards, something they haven't done since the Marino days. They will definately need to become better in other areas of their offense besides the Wildcat, but its a lot of fun to watch now. Houston has all the pieces; a solid quarterback, a clear running back stud in Steve Slaton, and one of the best receivers in the league in Andre Johnson. They have beat Miami all three times the teams have competed. A win here for either of these teams would be Huge for their season.

THE YEAR OF THE RUNNING BACK

In every NFL draft there is at least one position that is laden with talent. More often than not, this fresh crop of virtuosos wastes very little time in announcing its presence to the rest of the NFL. The hype swells over the course of training camp and preseason, but it all counts for nothing until the promise actually manifests itself on the playing field during the regular season. We’ve seen years (like the class of 2006) that were so diverse they defied designation. We’ve also had years (like the class of 2005) that were a little more singular in positional depth. This year, I believe, we can officially label as “The Year of the Running Back.”

So I normally title my Monday blog: Monday Mourning due to being hungover from a full day of drinking and watching sports, hence the “mourning” because I have to get up, go to work, puke in the bathroom, and subsequently fall asleep in all of my meetings and get absolutely no work done. But today is different, mainly due to the fact that CBS’s and Fox’s regional coverage of NFL games in my area was HORRIBLE. Games that had a spread of +11 with no fantasy implications at all were being aired, so I went and watched polo (you know, the sport where guys on horses trot around and whack a ball with mallets). I had never been to a polo game before but we decided to go due to the possibility of attractive females (there are always beautiful women at horse events). We mingled with a few and made up some elaborate lies that we were just checking out the competition and had our horses stabled a few miles away. We were obviously out of place, with our cheers of “nice pass man!” and “shoooooot it!” but we wholeheartedly plan on attending it every Sunday for the rest of the season – pending what NFL games are on of course.

So, for yet another week, we hear reports of Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter "running his mouth." The three-time Prow Bowler spent the days leading up to Dolphins' Week 3 matchup against New England reportedly saying that Matt Cassel was "no Tom Brady" and guaranteeing the Dolphins' win. Now, two weeks later to the Miami Herald, Porter says he didn't say any of that and that his quotes got construed. What he did say, according to Porter, was that the Fins would "try" to get a win. He did tell the press that he thought the practice of talking up opponents made them sound like "robots," and that he wasn't going to talk like everyone else becuase that's not how people really think.

This week will already be week five in the National Football League.  Amazing how fast the seasons go by.  It seems like only last week when I was cursing Dave Wannstedt for trading away the Dolphins draft choices for the likes of Lamar Gordon and A.J. Feeley.  Seems only four days ago I was cursing Nick Saban for drafting Jason Allen and then bolting back to the college ranks after insisting he wouldn't.  And it seems like it was only yesterday when I was cursing Cam Cameron for... well, pretty much everything he did.  But alas, this year I find myself with a little hope.  The Dolphins are coming off a bye week which was preceded by a lopsided victory over the New England Patriots.  Albeit Brady-less, this victory was invigorating and brought a sense of relief and a touch of excitement to Miami Dolphins fans everywhere.  The question now, is where do they go from here?

Likewise basketball fans always have the chance to see if the Suns can finally get past the Spurs and football fans love seeing the rivalry of the Eagles Vs the City of Philadelphia when the Eagles so much as get tackled for a loss.
