Ladainian Tomlinson

Starting today and till the end of next season I am going to blog about the Chargers for the preseason, regular season, and or the playoffs!

Well to get things started I would like to say they are really heading in the right direction.  QB Philip Rivers states that he and Tomlinson are healthy and ready to play this year. Shawn Merriman and Antonio Cromartie coming back from their respective injuries feel this year will be different. Their off-season is going really good. The rookies, I must say are doing exceptionally espceally the rookie Louis Vazquez. Here the link where you can read all about his change from College to the pros(  http://www.chargers.com/news/article-1/vasquez-embracing-new-challenge/909cfe91-8f77-4d43-9e19-a972f2354cb6)

Although "my" Minnesota Vikings were eliminated from the playoffs last weekend, the Divisional Round of the NFL playoffs for both leagues offers a host of great matchups, Vikings or no Vikings...

I will admit that, due to the opening of deer hunting season here in Minnesota, I did not watch the big Vikings/Packers game last Sunday on TV.  However, from listening to most of it on the radio and watching all the postgame shows and highlights, I would like to add a few thoughts on what has (at least so far) been the Vikings' most exciting victory of the season:

On the first play of Denver's Monday Night game against New England, Jay Cutler injured his finger on Vince Wilfork's helmet. This must have messed with Coach Mike Shanahan's usual pre-planned 15-play commencement to every game. Seeing the immediate innaccuracy of Cutler's throwing after the bang-up, more run plays started to get dialed. Since Selvin Young was out of the game, it was 33-year-old back-up Michael Pittman's job to carry the load. Soon thereafter, during the same long drive downfield, Pittman was injured and taken out of the game. Thus third-stringer Andre Hall had to carry the ball. And on his first touch, he fumbled it. The drive was simply doomed from the beginning.

Many fans of the NFL have been a bit superstitious over the years with players and curses. There’s the Sports Illustrated Curse, the Chunky Soup Curse, and the Madden Curse to name a few. Now that the New York Giants QB Eli Manning has been named the cover boy for John Madden’s football video game, Madden NFL 09, the Internet is abuzz with speculation about whether he will be the next victim.

San Diego Chargers fans:  Yes, your team was so close to Super Bowl XLII and you (as well as me) were extremely disappointed.  We are tired of hearing “next year” when speaking of a Super Bowl championship for San Diego but ladies and gentlemen let’s not make any rash decisions.

t what worked and what didn’t work for the Bolts.    What Worked -With RB Ladainian Tomlinson playing an alien role as a spectator for much of the game, back-up RB Michael Turner took heed of the opportunity.  Turner thrust through the Pats defense running 65 yards on 17 carries.  RB Darren Sproles aided the effort going 34 yards on 3 carries- an astounding 11.3 yards per carry average. -Antonio Cromartie, Drayton Florence, and Quentin Jammer each swiped one of Patriots QB Tom Brady’s passes out of the air.  Brady’s 3 interceptions in one game is a far cry from the 8 interceptions he threw all season.  Notably, Cromartie’s grab broke Brady’s two year streak with no red-zone interceptions. -The same trio also prevented the threat of Patriots WR Randy Moss.  Moss seized only one catch for 18 yards.  The Pats WR’s were held to just 11 catches for 97 yards.  -K Nate Kaeding’s consistency proved to be one of the few things in sync.  Kaeding landed 4 out of 4 field goals, the only Charger to slap the score board.   -QB Philip Rivers coped admirably with his knee injury completing 19 of 37 passes for 211 yards.  Although his play may be seen as just average, he played under extraordinary circumstances.  Confirming Monday to have undergone knee surgery to remove loose cartilage in his knee the day after the Chargers upset the Colts, he played the entire game with no ACL in his right knee. -Rivers found rhythm in his passing game leading WR Vincent Jackson with six catches for 93 yards and WR Chris Chambers with seven catches for 90 yards.  What didn’t Work -First and foremost, the Chargers needed to trade some of the field goals for touchdowns.  With three opportunities in the red zone, none of which converted into a touchdown, a win for the Bolts would have involved more than just Kaeding’s points.  -Too many injuries were given a face on the Chargers’ roster.  The banged up Bolts were missing NFL’s leader in rushing yards, RB

As we near the last – sniff – weekend of the NFL season to decide who is going to the Super Bowl, I realize that empty feeling is coming back. You dedicated fans know what I am talking about! It’s that feeling you get when your beloved jersey gets ripped, your lucky hat disappears, or the store is out of your favorite beer. Yep – that vacant, lonely feeling that begins to creep in this same time every year. Sure, we savor this last weekend and then spend two weeks planning for the big day. Afterward, we are numb and feign interest in the Pro Bowl, just kidding ourselves that it is an actual game.

I knew they could do it! They had their number earlier in the year and they did it again today! The San Diego Chargers upset the Indianapolis Colts in a 28-24 victory that came down to the wire at the RCA Dome. Shawne Merriman and Antonio Cromartie were key in the defense against Peyton Manning, both making big plays when it really counted. I was truly worried when LaDainian Tomlinson went out of the game and even more pessimistic when Philip Rivers had to be sidelined – but the rest of the team made me a believer! I take back every less than flattering statement I have ever uttered about Norv Turner!  He really is an NFL coach that deserves respect.

NFL Playoffs!? That can only mean one thing – bandwagon season! Now that my team #1 and #2 are done for the season, its time to jump on the way only a true NFL football fan can.

My Tampa Bay Buccaneers played an exceptional first quarter today and then decided to fall asleep on me. Too bad the game has four quarters! Argh! I really thought they could make something happen this year. My #1 team(s) the San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland Raiders never even made it to the playoffs - so the time has come for auxiliary cheering methods – jump on the bandwagon! I have planned out who I will be rooting for next week for sure (remaining season afterward to be determined):
