Bolts Don't Back Down After 0-2 Start posted on 09/23/2008

Recap

After starting the 2008 season with disappointing losses, the Chargers took the Qualcomm Stadium field by storm, hitting the Jets in the mouth offensively, and stealing their lunch money on defense.  An Antonio Cromartie “pick-6” set the tone for the once lacking San “Iego” defense, and seemed to put a swagger into a “D” that at one time was considered the best in football.  Despite LaDainian Tomlinson and Antonio Gates having to play through the pain of injuries, the San Diego offense looked balanced, with LT finding the “Promised Land” twice, and Gates joining Chris Chambers and rookie fullback Mike Tolbert in the end zone through the air attack.

MVP

Phillip Rivers (19/25, 250 yds, 3 TD’s, 1 INT)  Rivers continued to make a case to be named the best quarterback in football this season, throwing 3 TD passes (all in the first half), and continuing to lead the Bolts team into the end zone consistently.  With both LT and Gates not 100 percent healthy, the 5th year QB has emerged as a player both coaches and teammates can count on to make big plays when the chips are down.

Week 3 Breakdown: Jets vs Chargers posted on 09/19/2008

Overlook

The Chargers enter their game against the New York Jets as a 10-point favorite despite entering the week at 0-2.  Running Back LaDainian Tomlinson is listed as questionable for the game, and has been sitting out of practice all week with an injured toe, an obvious major point of concern for the Bolts.  Beginning the season 0-3 wouldn’t exactly rule out a playoff run for San Diego (see my earlier column), but it would almost entirely take away any chance of making the Super Bowl.  No team has ever made it to the title game after beginning a season 0-3.

3 Keys to the Game

1) The Chargers Need a Good Start

No Panic Button Needed for Bolts posted on 09/18/2008
Two games into the season, the whispers are deafening: “Norv Turner can’t get it done,” “L.T. isn’t the same player he was two years ago,” “The Chargers defense can’t stop anyone without Shawne Merriman.”  I’m sick and tired of hearing that two last-second losses to good football teams immediately spells disaster for the Charger football team.  Those types of games happen, and I’m about to explain why they aren't the end of the world…With the New York Jets coming to town Monday night, there’s no doubt the game is extremely important for San Diego.  But is the game crucial?  I say no.  It seems impossible for a team to overcome an 0-3 hole, and still make it into the playoffs.  But t

Let 'Em Play Refs! posted on 09/15/2008
The Chargers should be 1-1 this morning.  After the short-shoulders of Darren Sproles carried the Bolts out of an 18-point deficit, and into the end zone with just minutes to play, the referees cost San Diego the game. With minutes to play, and Denver facing a 3rd and goal, Bronco QB Jay Cutler rolled right, and had the ball slip from his fingers, onto the ground, and eventually into the hands of a San Diego defender.  However, referee Ed Hochuli blew an inadvertent whistle before the Bolts player recovered the ball.  Therefore, Denver got it back on the 10-yard line (where it hit the ground after Cutler dropped it).

Now, I'm not a believer in secret agendas from the NFL.  In fact, I think Ed Hochuli is a good official (although somebody might want to make sure he doesn't have any illegal connections to BALCO... the man is jacked!).  I just believe there's a better way to do this, and I'm going to present that to you today.

A Must-Win Week 2 Game: Chargers vs Broncos Breakdown posted on 09/12/2008

Outlook

It’s not often that a Week 2 matchup can be described as “must-win,” but this weekend’s Chargers/Broncos game is exactly that.  Only one team in 2007 went on to make the playoffs after beginning the year 0-2, and though the New York Giants won the Super Bowl, it took an incredible run down-the-stretch just to earn a Wild Card berth.

San Diego heads into Denver having not lost to the Broncos since 2005.  However, Mike Shanahan’s club is on a new level, with QB Jay Cutler having taken his game to the next level.  Part of Cutler’s maturing process has come through the growth at the wide receiver position, where Brandon Marshall is out to prove something after sitting out Week 1 with a suspension, and Rookie Eddie Royal began his NFL career with a bang last week.
