San Diego Padres Opening Day 2008
March 31, 2008 -- Like much of Major League Baseball today is the opening day of the 2008 season; tonight's game is 7:05 at Petco Park where the Padres have their home opener against the Houston Astros--2007 Cy Young Award Winner Jake Peavy throws against Astros ace Roy Oswalt; Channel 4 San Diego will telecast while Double XX SportsRadio (1090 & 105.7) will carry the broadcast over the airwaves. XEMO 860 AM en Espanol; the Padres acquired INF Justin Huber from the Kansas City Royals back on 3/23 for a player later and cash considerations; local TV morning show KUSI "Good Morning San Diego" broadcast from 6-9 a.m. this morning from Petco. Easy-on-the-eyes veterans Bridget Naso and Sandra Maas were at the helm. Both qualify in the big-league-babe category; LHP Glendon Rusch and OF Jody Gerut both had their contracts purchased from the Portland Triple-A club and start the season on the Padresbig league roster; CF veteran Jim Edmonds begins the season on the 15-day disabled list trying to heal from a strained right calf muscle; for those who just can't get enough baseball in Southern California, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are on 800 AM (ESPN Radio) in the SD through the air market; tonight's home opener will feature a giant U.S. Flag unfurled by hundreds of firefighters. A helicopter fly-over and a salute to fire victim first responders; tonight's game is a sell out; Petco gates open at 5 p.m. and the pre-game ceremonies begin at 6:35 p.m.; most excitingly is that tonight's game is the first to be viewed on my new flat screen monitor in my garage. We'll pop a few Coors Lights tonight and keep rockin' the suburbs (like Quiet Riot did!); rarely do I endorse a business in an editorial sense but the downtown eatery/pre-game post-game spotlight is on the new "Tilted Kilt" at 310 10th Avenue adjacent to Petco, www.tiltedkilt.com. The new franchised establishment (looking perhaps for a bit of the Hooters-like market share) opened for St. Patricks Day customers. The boys and I plan to check it out soon and write a review. Out for now. Enjoy your baseball day and Go Pads!
